Volkswagen presents the new ID.7*, an all-electric saloon for the upper mid-size class: Find out here why you should enhance the profile of your fleet with the long-range vehicle set to launch this autumn.

Numerous bestsellers from Volkswagen have already taken to the roads over the company’s long history – and in some instances the brand has even come to embody the company car. Good examples of this are the Passat and Passat Estate (Fuel consumption in l/100 km (WLTP): combined 8.3-4.8; CO₂ emission in g/km (WLTP): combined 189-125), which as business models in the upper mid-size segment have already transported generations of field staff to their customers. Volkswagen has now added an all-electric model to its portfolio with the new ID.7*, which cannot fail to impress in a number of ways, especially in everyday business life. That’s because the vehicle offers frequent travellers a number of benefits: Long range, spacious and high-quality interior design, clearly structured user guidance and – not forgetting – powerful drive systems whose batteries can also be charged swiftly thanks to fast charging. But first things first.

Range: Up to 700 km (according to WLTP)

Electric vehicles are very dynamic, can produce zero local emissions and, thanks to their long wheelbases, offer a comfortable interior design. Sounds convincing, but for most business users, mileage is still an overriding factor – which obviously also has to do with the fact that frequent travellers often drove diesel models in the past that offer high fuel economy. The all-electric ID.7* now promises an impressive range of up to 700 km (measured using the WLTP method), which should make the switch to electric easier for many company car drivers.

Space: Generous

The new ID.7* is almost five metres long – with a wheelbase of close to three metres. This allows an interesting spatial concept with lots of room behind the wheel and on the other seats, front and rear. The newly developed ergoActive premium seats are available optionally and offer a high level of seat comfort, especially on long journeys; they are fitted with a massage programme and dynamic air conditioning. The size of the saloon likewise impacts positively on the potential luggage capacity: The luggage compartment can fit more than 500 litres – plenty of space for luggage, even on longer business trips

 

Incidentally, the ID.7* is also forging new paths in terms of interior climate, since the saloon can activate the air conditioning as soon as it recognises the car keys in the near vicinity. This allows prompt cooling or heating of the interior according to the weather conditions and user preference, even before starting out on the journey.

Operating concept: Clearly structured

The previously mentioned sales successes enjoyed by Volkswagen were always associated with the company’s commitment to quality. Not only was the finishing quality of particular importance, but also the design – and in this context the appearance of the materials used as well. Especially in the interior: With the new ID.7*, Volkswagen has focused once more on this aspect at a premium level. For example, the quality of the dash panel has been accentuated both visually and to the touch, with the 38 cm infotainment touchscreen (corresponds to a screen diagonal of 15 inches) catching the eye in particular: It is designed as a stand-alone feature and is angled slightly towards the driver’s seat, which improves visibility. At the same time, the user guidance is tailored even more acutely to the needs of the user and, for example, permanently displays a Home button and a bar for freely assignable favourites buttons on key apps. The seat functions and air conditioning can likewise be operated with the touchscreen. All in all, the controls and the interior radiate a very stylish look – with plenty of recycled materials too, thanks to Volkswagen’s focus on sustainability.

Head-up display: Embedded reality

Because it is important for drivers to remain focused on what’s happening on the road, the head-up display in the Volkswagen ID.7* – available as standard from the basic model up – projects key information directly into the driver’s field of vision using augmented reality technology. Status displays, such as the current and permitted speed, are shown by the system at close range for driver and passengers, as if they were about 3.5 metres in front of the car. Other information, such as navigation instructions, appears about ten metres in front of the ID.7*. In both cases, the information is fittingly superimposed on the real outside world. The legally prescribed standard notifications, such as speed and warning messages, are shown additionally on the usual display behind the steering wheel – although in stylishly reduced form.

Drive: Dynamic. With power

The new ID.7* will be available with a newly developed motor based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) when it launches on the European market – probably towards the end of the year. The high-performance power unit with the internal designation APP550 delivers considerably more power to the rear axle – while offering improved efficiency at the same time. Depending on the model, customers have a choice of two battery sizes to generate the required electrical energy. Volkswagen is predicting a range of up to 615 km for the smaller battery, while a range of up to 700 km will be possible with the lager battery.¹⁾ Incidentally: The large battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in approx. 25 minutes at DC fast-charging stations at a moderate outdoor temperature and a charging capacity of up to 200 kW.²⁾

Conclusion: Potential bestseller

The ID.7* will provide fleet managers with a trump card in terms of all-electric company cars when it launches in autumn. Pitched in the upper mid-size segment, it should also mean they have a good hand to play when it comes to demanding company car users.
